Norfolk

This is one of the many mermaids scattered around the waterside in downtown Norfolk.  The pavilion or mini-mall seems to be modeled on the inner harbor at Baltimore.  MacArthur Square and the memorial are dedicated to the memory of the General.  He chose to be buried her in the home town of his mother.
Every seaport city has its resident sailing vessels for the tourist.  Such boats are now ubiquitous all up and down the east cost.  Actually this one is Liberty Clipper from Boston, in transit to Key West. This homecoming memorial is to honor all those who go to sea.

On the occasion of the last reunion of confederate veterans of the Civil War in 1951 this memorial to their fallen camerades was erected.  There are certain aspects of the south and the Civil War that continue to surprise me.

10/15/00 Norfolk, VA

In the morning we made the short trip on the Elizabeth River to Norfolk. We spent all afternoon on boat chores.  Maria did laundry, again.  I rode one of the bikes about eight miles to the boating stores to look for a prop nut zince, marine grease, and sealant.  With Christopher's help I worked on making a seal around the grease nipple at the rudder stuffing box.

10/16/00  Maria finishes the laundry, I packed the stuffing box, washed the hull, waxed the transom.  Diana and I spent awhile walking around the waterfront so she could photograph all of the mermaids.  In the afternoon Maria went to the grocery store to stock the larders for a week.  Christopher slept late after going to a 'rave' in Norfolk.  In the afternoon he washed the decks and cockpit.  He has also become a master at the grill.  Diana and I spent the afternoon at Nauticus, the Norfolk maritime museum.  Most of the exhibits and demonstrations are for kids a little older, but I think she enjoyed herself.  Tomorrow we start down the ICW.
