Thomas Point Light

Comments:  The light sits on the long shoal extending from the north side of the South River.  This is the only cottage style screw pile light in its original location.   You can find two others on dry land at the museums in Baltimore, St. Michaels, and Solomons.  The screw pile, or auger, design is attributed to Alexander Mitchell and was in use in England by 1838.   Using a great big screw solved the problem of building a light house on the muddy bottom of the bay.
